MacBook Pro has arrived…

Posted in /etc by Roland Schemers on the February 23rd, 2006

Just a quick post on my new MacBook Pro that arrived yesterday. Definitely *fast*. The Firefox Intel build (I picked up here) screams.

I do all my dev work on a dual 2.0 Ghz G5 with 1.5 GB of memory, and when I run “reset-the-world” (what we do during development that initializes a Zimbra server from scratch with a couple hundred messages) was taking about 2 minutes 45 seconds or so.

On my MacBook Pro (2 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 2 GB ram, and 100 GB 7200 RPM drive) it takes about 1 minute 15 seconds. This was with x86 versions of all the servers (MySQL, OpenLDAP, Postfix) running on my laptop.

Marc is busy getting Mac x86 support into our build system, which is going very smooth, given how portable our system is.

I’m definitely looking forward to Intel-based desktops and servers!

Are you going to make it a Universal Package?

Not sure yet. If the pkg gets too bit we won’t we feel that optimizing size is much better than shipping a double sized download. We currently are around 100MB, so if we have to double it and get to 200MB it seems two pkgs would be better.
